Belgian Students Continue Protests as Education Reforms Face Opposition

(MENAFN) Student demonstrations against proposed education reforms continued in several parts of Belgium on Monday, with police reporting 16 administrative arrests as protesters gathered in multiple cities, according to reports.

In central Liege, a number of businesses shut their doors as a precaution while groups of demonstrators moved through the city, including areas surrounding Guillemins train station.

Authorities said 16 people had been taken into administrative custody shortly before 11 a.m. local time (0900GMT).

Hundreds of students also assembled outside several educational institutions across the city as opposition to the reforms continued.

Police said some protesters were carrying items that could potentially be used to make Molotov cocktails, including glass bottles and pieces of fabric. However, authorities said no flammable materials were discovered.

At the Saint-Michel Institute, some demonstrators reportedly tried to damage the building’s shutters. The mayor said two people were arrested over the incident.

Elsewhere across the Liege region, firefighters responded to reports of scooter fires in Herstal and Chenee.

In Herstal, approximately 20 students blocked the entrance to the IPES school as part of the ongoing demonstrations.

Meanwhile, students protesting on the Albert I Bridge in Liege displayed a banner objecting to a tuition fee of €1,200 (around $1,345).
