Violence Erupts in Brussels Amid Protests Over Education Cuts

(MENAFN) Protests in Belgium’s capital turned violent after demonstrations against proposed education budget cuts escalated into clashes, according to reports.

What began as a large-scale peaceful rally involving thousands of students and teachers in central Brussels reportedly deteriorated later in the day when some individuals set fires, damaged property, and confronted police forces. According to reports and social media footage, masked groups were seen participating in the unrest, with some online claims suggesting involvement of youths who were not part of the original demonstration.

The protest was organized in opposition to austerity measures introduced by the French Community government, which is responsible for overseeing French-language education in the country. The proposed reforms include increasing annual university tuition fees from approximately €835 to around €1,194, as well as requiring certain secondary school teachers to take on additional teaching hours without extra compensation.

Government officials argue that the measures are intended to reduce public spending and address a budget deficit projected to reach €1.9 billion. They also note that the revised tuition levels would bring costs closer to those charged at universities in the Flemish-speaking region.
The reforms have faced sustained resistance from students, educators, and trade unions, who warn that the changes could reduce access to higher education and place additional strain on teaching staff already working under pressure.

Despite the unrest, lawmakers in the Parliament of the French Community approved the legislation after an extended debate lasting more than 14 hours, allowing the reforms to proceed. Regional leadership defended the decision as a necessary step to stabilize public finances amid growing fiscal constraints.
