Thousands Rally in Brussels Against Education Reforms

(MENAFN) A large demonstration took place in Brussels on Monday, with thousands of people protesting against recently introduced education policies.

According to reports, the gathering initially began at Poelaert Square near the Palace of Justice, where an estimated 500 to 1,000 people assembled, as reported by Dutch-language broadcaster. The protest later expanded as participants marched toward Brussels Central Station, passing through Regentschapsstraat and Koningsplein.

Police said the demonstration reached its peak with around 2,500 participants at Poelaertplein.

Protesters voiced strong opposition to education reforms introduced by the government of the French Community, while also criticizing what they described as excessive police force used during earlier demonstrations.

The protest remained mostly peaceful throughout the day at Poelaert Square, although some fireworks and firecrackers were set off.

Authorities maintained distance from the crowd and did not intervene, reporting no major incidents during the main demonstration.

However, earlier in the day, tensions were reported near Brussels Central Station and the Mont des Arts area, where several shared bicycles and electric scooters were set on fire ahead of the march.
