2,500 March in Brussels Over Education Reforms

(MENAFN) Up to 2,500 demonstrators took to the streets of Brussels at the protest's peak, rallying against contested education reforms and what participants described as excessive police force during prior demonstrations, according to a Dutch-language broadcaster.

The protest originated at Poelaert Square, near the Palace of Justice, where between 500 and 1,000 participants initially assembled before the crowd swelled as marchers moved toward Brussels Central Station via Regentschapsstraat and Koningsplein. Police confirmed the peak attendance figure of approximately 2,500 at Poelaertplein.

The demonstration remained largely peaceful throughout the day at Poelaert Square, with the exception of firecrackers and fireworks. Police maintained a considerable distance and did not intervene at any point, reporting no major incidents.

Tensions had, however, flared earlier in the day near Brussels Central Station and the Mont des Arts area, where shared bicycles and electric scooters were set alight ahead of the main march.

Protesters directed their anger at education reforms introduced by the government of the French Community, which pushed through the contested measures despite sustained opposition — the Parliament of the French Community having recently approved the legislation regardless of widespread dissatisfaction across the French-speaking education sector.

The education collective Mars Attacks! signaled the movement has no intention of standing down, announcing daily demonstrations or actions over the next two weeks across multiple cities throughout Wallonia.
