Belgium Launches USD4.2B ODIN Defense Innovation Drive

(MENAFN) Belgium is set to pour €3.7 billion ($4.2 billion) into defense innovation over the next decade under a sweeping new program, as European nations continue ramping up military spending amid growing security pressures.

Defense Minister Theo Francken unveiled the initiative — dubbed ODIN — on Monday, framing it as a decisive push to fast-track the development of cutting-edge technologies for the Belgian armed forces while simultaneously bolstering the country's domestic defense industry.

According to a report by a news agency, ODIN forms a central pillar of the broader Defense, Industry and Research Strategy (DIRS) — a long-term framework developed since 2022 by the Royal Higher Institute for Defense and the Federal Public Service Economy. Under the strategy, €350 million will be channeled annually into research, innovation, and industrial production.

Francken was emphatic that the program was built for tangible results rather than bureaucratic blueprints. "This is not about plans on paper. It is about investing €3.7 billion in a focused way over the coming years," he said.

The government stated that the investment is designed to comprehensively modernize Belgium's military capabilities while cementing its competitive standing within an expanding European defense sector — a strategic priority that has gained fresh urgency across the continent in recent years.
