EU Commission Pushes for Stronger Support for Energy-Poor Households
Dan Jorgensen, European Commissioner for Energy and Housing, told the European Parliament in Brussels that urgent steps are needed to shield citizens and ease rising electricity costs, particularly for those most affected by energy bills.
"We strongly encourage member states to support energy-poor and vulnerable households by providing emergency income support to those who need it, by acting to reduce excise duties on electricity, and by implementing further safeguards to prevent consumer disconnections," Jorgensen said.
The commissioner highlighted that member states should fully utilize the tools within the EU’s citizens’ energy package to allow consumers to benefit from competition and lower prices. This includes helping households and businesses switch to more affordable energy contracts, increasing the flexibility of electricity use, and empowering citizens to generate and share clean energy.
Regarding taxation, Jorgensen emphasized that member states must ensure electricity is taxed at lower rates than fossil fuels, noting that such a move would ease household burdens and promote a transition to cleaner energy.
"We need to lower tax rates on electricity. It is up to member states to make sure that electricity is taxed less than fossil fuels," the commissioner stressed.
