Italy Hails EU Move to Halt Retaliatory Trade Measures
Speaking during a government event in Ancona, Tajani said, “The European Union did well to prevent a trade war by suspending countermeasures. Now we must see how the negotiations will proceed.”
He characterized the current situation as a broad framework involving a 15% tariff, while emphasizing that exemptions require careful review and that negotiations will proceed sector by sector, according to an Italian news agency.
Tajani acknowledged the talks are exploratory, adding, “final assessments will only be made at the end of a process that could take weeks, if not months.”
He stressed Italy’s proactive role in collaboration with both Brussels and Washington to safeguard its premium exports.
“We are strongly committed, as Italians, to ensuring our quality products are safeguarded,” Tajani affirmed.
Furthermore, he highlighted the EU’s 15% tariffs as a potential advantage compared to countries facing steeper duties.
“This could represent an opportunity to enter markets that have so far been inaccessible,” he observed.
Underlining the necessity of firm government support, Tajani called for decisive action to protect Italy’s business community.
“We must be determined and capable of reacting, with strong action from the government to protect our entrepreneurial system,” he said.
